Seaboard System and other merged railroads become CSX Transportation.
CSX Heritage
The West Florida Railroad Museum begins operations in the Milton depot. By 2001 it accumulates two L&N freight cars, L&N and Frisco cabooses, and four passenger cars, including “Globe Coffee House” diner and two nuclear transport cars from A.E.C service, along with a large collection of L&N and Frisco memorabilia.

The West Florida Railroad Museum does a major restoration of the depot building upon receipt of a grant from the State of Florida’s Bureau of Historic Preservation.

Amtrak’s “Sunset Limited” begins tri-weekly service across North Florida from Los Angeles to Miami via New Orleans and Jacksonville with stops in Pensacola and Crestview. Pensacola builds new depot for Amtrak. This ends a 22-year hiatus in passenger service across the Florida Panhandle.

Burlington Northern merges with Santa Fe to form BNSF Railroad.

BNSF sells former Frisco line from Pensacola to Amory, Mississippi to Alabama & Gulf Coast Railway. Freight service continues today.

Hurricane Katrina destroys the CSX main line along the Louisiana and Mississippi Gulf Coast, ending Amtrak’s “Sunset Limited” passenger service in Florida.

CSXT sells former P&A and Florida Central and Western lines from Pensacola to Jacksonville to Florida, Gulf & Atlantic Railroad. Freight service continues today.
